Marka27 is a prolific artist who is never confined to one medium. His graffiti has been seen in high profile galleries throughout the east and west coast and has shown along side artist such as Futura, and Sam Flores. His street murals/ graffiti have been published in several life style magazines and books, most recent “Graffit Planet”, “Burning New York” and “Graffiti L.A.”. Marka27 made his mark with his original “Audio Canvas” paintings with built in speakers, also his large speaker installations with legendary hiphop icons painted on the speaker boxes. What is the medium that you most commonly work in?
Most commonly work with mix-medium of acrylics, latex, spraypaint, wood, speaker installations.
What tends to inspire you and your work?
My work is currently inspired by music, ancient cultures, and soulful use of colors, patterns and designs. I have love for nostalgic design elements from retro to 80’s pop culture that seems to find itself in subtle ways existing in my work.
If it was not for art I would be………..?
A poor imitation of art.
Do you have any artistic relatives? if so what do they do?
My father was very artistic with his use of a belt. He swung that belt like Polock flings paint to canvas. My brother Julio Quiñonez is an amazing interior designer. My doughter Reina has mastered ducks, hearts, and our family portrait with crayons, markers, and water colors.
Is music part of your creative process? What do you listen to most?
I listen to a wide range from Fela Kuti, Pharaoh Sanders, James brown, to Jay Dilla. Music is like red bull for my creative process without the gross after taste unless Im listening to some Bobby brown.
What food most reminds you of home?
Mole con Tortillas de Mais
When you are with family do speak mostly in english or espanol?
With my mother only Spanish and a little English.
What do you think could help raise the profile of young Latino artists here in America?
Have more people in the art market support Latino Artist.
Is there a connection between Latino artists here in the US and those throughout the hemisphere?
Not sure to be honest I havnt traveled enough abroad to know.
